SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (2020)
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a terrific adaptation of the classic series which is infused with likable characters, fun action set pieces, great visuals, and an obvious love of the source material. It's what all video game movies should be. Fun.
SILENT HILL (2006)
Probably the most visually impressive film on this list. SILENT HILL is a terrifying game series that doesn't squander it's first live action film (let's not talk about the awful sequel). Gorgeous visuals, grotesque violence, and it does the source material justice without dipping too deep into fan service.
MORTAL KOMBAT (1995)
While not violent like the games, the spirit of the games is certainly there in this really fun, cheesy and very likable B-movie. Also, the Goro puppetry and animatronics are some of the best out there!
TOMB RAIDER (2018)
While generic in parts, this adaptation of the classic game series gives us a likable and non-sexualized version of Lara Croft played very well by Alicia Vikander. It's an old school adventure film and does that genre and the games justice.
POKEMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU (2019)
I still can't believe that Pokémon looks THIS good in Live Action. It's almost unbelievable that they didn't screw it up. A fun film that has a few too many obvious "plot twists" and way too many jokes that don't land. Still, it's great to see a Bulbasaur and a Squirtle in a Hollywood film like this.
I'm not a fan of the franchise personally (don't hurt me!) but even I could tell that this was a great adaptation of the legendary series. The human side is on the weak side but the Orcs story is captivating and the visuals weren't as video gamey as I thought they'd be. A solid movie.
FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN (2001)
I'm one of the few people out there that really enjoyed this movie when it first came out. Sure, it barely feels like a Final Fantasy story but the visuals were absolutely breathtaking at the time and I even enjoyed some of the characters. It's corny but fun. Not a great video game adaptation but a fun movie and that's why it got the number 7.
POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE (1998)
The classic! It's not a great film but man did I love this movie and I watched it countless times when I was a child. Probably doesn't hold up well considering I'm now an adult but I'd be shaming myself if I didn't put it on the list somewhere.
Well, it gets the source material right. A bunch of giant animals, climbing on buildings, eating people, wrecking cities and hitting each other. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a great time watching Albino Gorilla George and Dwayne Johnson fight a giant alligator. Simple but fun.
DEAD SPACE: DOWNFALL (2008)
This might seem like an odd choice because it's a straight to DVD animated prequel but I felt like this one gets the game right more so than a lot of other video game adaptations. The animation is very cheap looking but the violence is there and the claustrophobic dread of the games was done as well as possible. I liked it!
