SELENA + CHEF - Season 2 (EPISODES 1 - 3)

Selena + Chef is a delightful start to the new year for people that adore cooking shows and preferably enjoy the personality of Selena Gomez. Premiering on HBO Max with three episodes, Selena learns a number of different recipes remotely with chefs Curtis Stone, JJ Johnson, and José Andrés. With each chef we get an entirely different experience of how they handle teaching their recipes to Selena, and it's an entertaining hour and a half binge.

The first season was just fine; full of charm but lacking the recipes or talent to keep me intrigued. So far with these opening three episodes, they're hitting it out of the park with both. Selena + Chef brings more attention to the fun, lighthearted Selena and her desire to learn all these unique dishes. What I especially like is that so far this season all of these dishes are plausible to make - including recipes for each on the HBO Max website, and that leaves me more intrigued to try.

At a rapidly paced half-hour, fans of Selena Gomez will find this show a great view into the clumsy kindness of the real person. Fans of cooking shows in general may find better recipes for themselves elsewhere, but the way they're presented will lack the smiles and laughter left behind by the acclaimed chefs on board here. If you have some time to kill, it's an absolute recommendation from a guy that wants to pretend like he knows how to cook.
