John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum is the third installment of the John Wick franchise - they have already announced John Wick 4 coming in 2021! This film does an amazing job following John Wick: Chapter 2. These films do such an incredible job of world building for the assassins and creating something original in each film. It is no surprise that it did wonderfully at the box office, as this film had so much action and story to offer.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum is the 3rd film directed by Chad Stahelski - his other films being the previous John Wick films. Chad does a phenomenal job directing this film, including his previous stunt training to make the action sequences really stand out from the typical action genre. One thing that separates this film from most other action films is the long shots and the lack of cuts during the action sequences. It feels more real, which is helped by hand to hand combat rather than a major gun or explosion battle. I look forward to anything else that Stahelski comes out with!
The plot of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum is a great story to add to the John Wick franchise. The stakes are higher than ever in this third chapter as everyone is now after John Wick. This series really knows how to build off of their predecessors and create fresh new storylines that add to the growing cast of characters and world building that is this High Table. The story is so well written - often times watching a sequel that introduces new laws or rules often feels like a cop-out, but in John Wick it feels natural, as if planned from the beginning. And with that ending, I very much look forward to John Wick 4.
ACTING | CHARACTERS | DIALOGUE:
Keanu Reeves comes back playing John Wick for a third time, and it is more epic than ever. He portrays the titular man who lost everything so well, and the new introduction of Halle Berry as Sofia was great. Their dynamic on screen worked so well, and Berry’s acting was also great - usually I am not a big fan of hers, but I hope we eventually get more of her character’s background story. Laurence Fishburne as Bowery King was great as in John Wick: Chapter 2. Ian McShane is phenomenal as Winston once again. The character building in this story is another reason this action film does better than most. Asia Kate Dillon as The Adjudicator was another amazing addition to this installment. She portrayed the straight-faced character very well until the end, and I look forward to what she will provide in the coming film.
VISUAL EFFECTS | MAKEUP | DESIGN:
MUSIC | SCORE | SOUND DESIGN:
The score in John Wick 3 did a phenomenal job of creating the feeling of suspense and getting your heart pumping. This was one of the very first elements I noticed when watching the film. It encourages the audience to become more enthralled with the film and the action sequences. The score at the beginning of the film is something to try to take notice of, as it begins with John Wick on the run, but I still found myself holding my breath due to the intensity of the music. Very well done.
Specials effects is not my area of expertise, but John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum does such a great job with their effects when it comes to the loss of limbs, or being stabbed. It all looks very real - but granted I have never seen someone be stabbed in the eye in real life. They use the special effects to their advantage, making John Wick kill people in very creative ways. Overall I really have no complaints when it comes to the special effects.
This is the first review I wrote that is entirely full. I haven’t seen such a great action film in ages, and I really can’t recommend this series enough. The writers put so much effort into creating a solid story that is well thought out for its sequels. The acting is great, and the score really adds to the film creating the feeling of tension throughout. Definitely try to go give this film a watch because it’s one to be experienced on the big screen!
