JOCKEY (2022) 

Jockey is a terrific drama that provides an insider's view at the labor intensive profession – delivering a profound emotional performance from Clifton Collins Jr. The film is beautifully shot to encapsulate the natural lighting of the track and the fireside chats – the film is executed in such a fashion that you can be in awe of the beautiful scenery one moment and squinting at the darkness encompassing our leads the next.

 

Jockey showcases veteran jockey Jackson’s struggles with his health as he continues to undertake the task of racing. As the season moves along, Jackson mentally may have no quit but his body begins to disagree and things become more of a personal challenge than ever before. Along with his health woes, Jackson has suddenly become aware of an estranged child who has begun the journey of an amateur jockey himself. As Jackson eventually comes to terms with his supposed son being in the picture -  the damage from his career becomes ever so clear. 

 

Through a mesmerizing performance from Collins Jr., Jockey easily absorbs the viewer into the livelihood of the profession – capturing the brutal nature of this particular lifestyle and the drama that comes along with it. Sitting at a short 94 minutes, this sports drama is one to seek out.
