Hoops is a new NETFLIX adult humor animated series in the vein of Bob’s Burgers and F Is For Family. The premiere episode of Hoops is luckily only 25 minutes, because if it were any longer, I’m not sure I could have made it through. Jake Johnson voices our lead, Coach Ben Hopkins, a high school basketball coach with big dreams who can’t seem to reel in the profanity for even a second. Almost every character swears like a sailor and with zero purpose; there's a way to make profanity funny, and the excessive nature of it here is certainly not it. Johnson has a unique voice that could easily make for a memorable animated lead, but I just didn’t connect with his character here in any aspect. While Bill Burr can create an always angry, yelling lead character in F Is For Family while still being a likable character, Ben Hoffman’s creation fails to shoot any baskets.

While not going the distance to make itself as unique as Big Mouth, people that have a distaste for mature humor involving minors should probably approach Hoops with caution, as the first episode alone has jokes surrounding a premium porn account and even the coach trying to pay for a teenager to get “laid.” I didn’t sync up with anything happening within the short runtime, and with a cast consisting of Johnson, Ron Funches, Cleo King, Natasha Leggero, Rob Riggle, Nick Swardson, and Sam Richardson, it’s clearly the material that’s missing every open shot.
