THE PREMIERE: “Poltergeist”
SHUDDER'S Cursed Films is a fascinating idea and for the short runtime of thirty minutes, the pilot can be watched at a rapid speed. The pilot handles the Poltergeist series of films and the supposed curse that inhabits the production of all three films. The show explores the reasons crew members and audience members believe there's a real curse involved, while breaking down just how unreasonable and sick a "curse" is when involving several young actresses that passed suddenly from health issues and domestic disputes.
Cursed Films is essentially a documentary, having interviews with several film critics, production hands and even the director of the third film sitting down to describe the insane theories. The show is a mere half hour and it unfortunately does drag, in fact it lost my attention multiple times, only successfully pulling me entirely back in when the third Poltergeist director spoke about his experience with the third film and how despicable the studio was once the young lead passed. It's a tragic story but a curse? That's unlikely.
Shudder has promised more fun cursed films such as The Omen, The Exorcist, The Crow, and Twilight Zone: The Movie. Stream it Now on the Shudder App.
THE VERDICT: HALF POPCORN
